Campylobacter jejuni is the major causative agent of foodborne gastroenteritis across Europe. Contaminated chicken meat is the main source of infections and hence control of this pathogen is critical to food security in the poultry industry.
The work described in this thesis was principally directed at trying to develop a mouse model for human campylobacteriosis and also at defining the antigenic relationships between the human strains. Human diarrhoeal and normal stool specimens were examined for Campylobacter fetus ss, jejuni by culture on plates of Campylobacter selective medium, incubated at 43.
Abstract. A modification of a blood-containing agar medium used for cultivation of Campylobacter jejuni is described which promoted or enhanced the haemolytic activity of this org.
Abstract. The bacterial pathogen Campylobacter jejuni is a leading cause of foodborne gastroenteritis worldwide. Consumption of contaminated poultry meat is considered a major sou.
Campylobacter is a bacterial pathogen commonly responsible for foodborne gastroenteritis worldwide. Due to the rapid development of resistance to antibiotics, many alternative interventions have been studied and bacteriophage therapy is one of them.
As a foundation for proving this thesis, the prevalence and incidence of C. jejuni, the structure and function of the bacteria, and control and treatment measures are explored. The methodology applied in developing this dissertation consisted of a review of selected literature on C. jejuni.
During her studies, she was exposed to RNA-sequencing technology but the highlight of her PhD was publishing the genome sequence of the Campylobacter strain that she worked on for her thesis. Dr. Brathwaite is currently assigned to the Veterinary Services Laboratory, Barbados.
It is known that under stress conditions Campylobacter jejuni can change morphology from a characteristic spiral to coccoid form (CF). Genetic and biochemical mechanisms of CF formation (CFF) in C. jejuni remain unclear, however cell shape maintenance in other microorganisms is known to be genetically determined. The focus of this study is the fiinctional analysis of spoT and amiA genes in C.
In this PhD project, I have investigated the survival and virulence of Campylobacter spp. in various matrices such as chicken faeces, swine manure and in co-culture with protozoa. In the first study, using bacterial culture and RT-qPCR methods, I found that viable C. jejuni cells could be detected for up to 5 days in both spiked and the naturally Campylobacter contaminated chicken faecal samples.

PATHOGENIC MECHANISMS OF Campylobacter jejuni: REGULATION OF Campylobacter INVASION ANTIGEN B By GARY ANDREW FLOM A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN MICROBIOLOGY.
Campylobacter species perform protein N-linked glycosylation and in C. jejuni at least 150 proteins, many of which are surface-exposed, may be modified. Therefore, the first portion of this thesis investigated the feasibility of using N-linked glycans as targets for antibody-based detection of Campylobacter species.
Genomic variation in the zoonotic pathogen Campylobacter. jejuni.
Campylobacter jejuni, a major enteric pathogen and a natural resident in the poultry gut, causes gastrointestinal illness followed by severe post-infection complications,. I also like to thank my PhD dissertation committee members for their constructive criticism which helped me to be a better researcher. Finally, a special thanks to friends.

Abstract. A rapid extraction protocol to facilitate the recovery of bacterial DMA from faecal material for use as a template for RCR was developed. This consisted of a basic guani.
